Strong Communities Start With Strong Voices- YOURS!
Got ballots? Take them to the ballot box. Why participation matters.
Houghton, only 49%? It’s true
HNA took King County Elections data for the four city council races. The year-to-year results were surprisingly consistent Yes, you should be asking your neighbors if they have voted yet- 50% may not have!
Why participation is important
In theory, those in elected office will respond to and try to please constituents and communities with higher voter participation more than those who don’t. High voter participation has the ability to hire and fire elected officials based on responsiveness to their constituents. Can we boost city council race participation in Houghton by 10, 20, 30% this year?
Why Don’t People Vote?
Often it’s because they don’t understand the connection to their voting and personal quality of life. They feel uninspired by candidates or that their vote doesn’t matter. One of HNA’s core missions is to proactively educate YOU, our neighbors about what is happening, how it impacts YOU what you can DO. On October 13th, we hosted a Houghton Kirkland City Council Candidate Forum. Whether you’ve voted already or not, it is well worth taking the time to watch from HNA’s YouTube Channel. There is nothing more important that you can do than vote your ballot and encourage everyone you know in Kirkland to do the same.
Don’t assume you can put your ballot in the mail and have it counted: Go to a ballot box!
This one was hard to believe. Shouldn’t I be able to put it in the mail on election day and be confident it will be postmarked that evening once delivered to my local post office? Local media is saying NO! It’s too late for that. The closest ballot box to Houghton is at Kirkland City Hall. It’s been moved to a different parking lot but, there are signs to direct you.
If you do go to a post office in person, ask to see the postmark applied. We’re attaching a link to this surprising topic and advice researched by Kiro Newsradio here: Story starts at 1 minute 45 seconds.
