Hear from the 8 city council candidates who will be vying for the 4 seats up for election. Our focus will be on issues important to our city as a whole, with a focus on Houghton and South Kirkland.

Your voice and your vote are vitally important – we hope you plan to attend to hear discussion and opinion from the candidates.

Our forum will be moderated by award-winning KOMO & KIRO journalist, Rick Van Cise.

At the Tuesday, September 16th, city council meeting, council approved an emergency exemption request from King County Waterwater Treatment Division for access and closure of the CKC to repair a failing 84” regional pipe that runs southbound along the CKC from approximately 52nd Ave NE to 108th Ave NE.  (webpage link in section title) Findings have shown that the pipe is leaking and if not repaired immediately, could result in structural failure. The closure is expected to begin on or around September 29th, followed by intermittent closures over the next few months until repairs are completed. The city will be working on appropriate detours.

A few things to be aware of if you live in this area: King County’s contractor will be submitting a noise variance permit for the progress, as bypass pumps will be running 24/7 while the work is in progress. Selective tree removal is expected in the vicinity, with mitigation (re-planting) of these impacts required.

Did you get a notice from King County? From the City? Please let us know what you received at [email protected]

It should be noted that the problem came to light during regular testing of city stream water quality which resulted in higher-than-normal bacteria which has been traced back to this particular pipe. The city will continue to work with all concerned until the problem is rectified. HNA appreciates the direct heads-up from a neighborhood leader from West of Market who brought this to our attention.
